FAQ
What is Chiryaku Dojo?
Chiryaku Dojo Belgium vzw is a non-profit organisation that exists of:
• Chiryaku Dojo (training for adults in Tienen - Main Dojo)
• Shiraha Dojo (training for youth in Tienen - Branch Dojo)
• Tetsukabuto Dojo (training for adults in Hoegaarden - Branch Dojo)
Why training?
By training martial arts, you gain more discipline, self-confidence, a strong will, perseverance, insight, self-control, ... . You sharpen your mind and learn to become a complete person. You also learn Japanese culture, become more flexible, and improve your fitness! In today's society, self-defense and self-protection are more necessary than ever.
What can I learn?
In our clubs, you'll learn all aspects of effective self-defense, both physically and mentally: evading, striking, kicking, choking, throwing, escaping, rolling, blocking, pinning, ground fighting, training in regular clothing with multiple attackers, handling weapons, showing respect, being assertive, improvising, practicing patience, and above all, learning to never give up! As with any traditional Japanese martial art, you'll also learn general etiquette, history, anatomy, medical knowledge, and spiritual refinement.
For whom are the lessons?
Our target audience ranges from the average man or woman who wants to do sports to security guards, military personnel, security guards, prison guards, stewards, police officers, professional bodyguards, ... . We also offer lessons for youth (ages 6-13) and workshops for schools, associations and companies.
Do women also train?
Women of all ages train in our clubs. It's a complete misconception that martial arts training is only for men or that you need a lot of strength to train effectively. It's all about technique! Some of the founders of the traditional schools we train were women!
How can I start?
Two free trial lessons are available for both youth and adults. Please schedule an appointment by email or use the contact form before visiting. You can enroll year-round.
What does martial art mean?
In combat sports, there's competition, weight divisions, and the goal is to learn how to score points and win trophies. Techniques are limited, not everything is allowed, which is unrealistic in a real fight. In martial arts, there's only one goal: survival. There are no limitations and the techniques have proven their effectiveness on battlefields throughout the centuries.
How to do a checktest?
Anyone wishing to do so can take an exam, up to and including 3rd Dan black belt, for Chief Dojo-Cho Kyoshi Filip Poffé at the Dojo, in front of all students. From 4th Dan black belt on (as well as for all Master titles), students must take the exam in front of Tanemura Soke on a Taikai or at the Honbu Dojo in Japan. All our instructors have trained in Japan and passed exams in front of Tanemura Soke. Everyone receives a diploma from Japan upon successful completion of the exam.
Jiu-Jitsu or Ju-Jutsu?
The only correct spelling is Ju-Jutsu (or Jujutsu). Jitsu means, among other things, "truth" and is a phonetically incorrectly adopted form from Japanese.
